Gremi

The royal fortress in the historic Georgian region of Kakheti. The fortress with the Church of the Archangels – that is all that remains of the city of Gremi. The architectural complex is situated to the east of the town of Kvareli.
City Gremi was the capital of Kakheti kingdom in the XVI-XVII centuries.
The capital was the royal residence and the lively market town of Great Silk Road, until it is not leveled with the ground troops of Shah Abbas I in 1615. Since then the city has never gained its former prosperity, and in the middle of the XVII century Kakheti kings moved their capital in Telavi.
2011 with the help of the Government of Georgia on the territory of the big Grammy been conducted restoration work.
